Day 38 - September 27

This morning after breakfast we had to move just down the road to a different campsite in order to stay for an additional night.  The 2nd site is actually even nicer as we have a great view of the forest and a bit more shade.  The temperature here is wonderful, not hot at all, around 70 degrees in the day and pretty cold at night.  We can’t believe the difference from Nevada.  We then had coffee and made a phone call to extend our health insurance coverage which took some time.  We knew we would have to do this as our original coverage was for only 30 days.  Then we went for a bike ride on the forest roads.  It was really nice to be on our bikes again.  Some of the roads were pretty rough, but it was fun.  We saw a historic ranger’s cabin that was built in 1910 and they put a big window in the doors so you can look in and it is fully furnished for the period.  It is located right across from Lake Jacob.  Then we came home and had a very light lunch (we’ve been eating way too much and aren’t feeling all that well) and had a quiet time of reading and resting.  Late in the afternoon, we went on another bike ride and we saw a helicopter land to be re-fueled at the forest helipad.  It is monitoring the fire. We also climbed a fire tower that is 80 feet high and was built in 1934.  We could really see the smoke from the fire up there.  There is no way that we could have done that in Canada, it would have been blocked at the bottom.  Back to the campsite again for supper and reading. We have been smelling quite a bit of smoke at the campground, but it’s not too bad. The smoke does make it look like it’s cloudy and the sun turned orangish red because of the smoke.  The end of another great day!

  1. Wow that was a high climb! Very interesting seeing the fire I bet. I hope it stays away from you and your campsite.
