Day 18 - September 7

Today both Peter and Megin were at work. Pete and I went to Courtenay to visit a Garden Centre that we had noticed in passing.  It was quite large, with lots of trees, perennials and annuals.  We bought some fall vegetable plants for Megin's garden and some violas and soil to plant in the front flower bed.  Then we toured a Therapeutic Garden that is run and maintained by volunteers.  They also host events like birthdays and weddings.  It was so neat and so interesting.  They also had allotments for people to use for vegetable gardening.  Most were really producing amazing crops.  It really made us feel like we should be using our big field as an event spot.  Something to work towards.

Then we went to the Air Force Museum.  We were greeted by two nice men, one of them grew up in Tiverton, ON.  I don't think they get many visitors, because we were treated like rare guests.  It was very well done and we learned lots about Canada's air force from WWI, WWII to present day.  Then we drove down the road to another part where they have actual old airplanes on display.  First we ate lunch in the parking lot which overlooks the airport.  The planes were really interesting.

Then we did some grocery shopping as we were invited for dinner to Willem and Drew's house tonight.  We wanted to bring dessert.  We got home around 3 and did some gardening.  Planted all the things we bought and cleaned out the front flower bed.  Just as we were going to leave for supper, there were a lot of sirens and we could see smoke that didn't seem very far away.  Megin, Larissa and I biked towards the smoke, but it wasn't as close as it looked.  Not in town, but just outside town in the forest.  Apparently it was an old cabin that someone had been living in.  Hopefully it can be put out quickly as things are very dry here.

We had a wonderful dinner with Willem and Drew, Peter and Megin, and Woody (a visitor from Holland) and Astrid (a roommate of the Both's).  We played some games after supper and are now home again.  A great day.
